Years ago I experimented with something I could've sworn was called PTGui, and it drove me NUTS.

Gotta love it!ĪHA! Peter, thanks for writing that. That never would've happened without this software. I figure about 90% of my KAP is panoramas these days.

And using either free or relatively inexpensive software, you can make huge sweeping panoramas using inexpensive cameras! I think KAP presents its own set of challenges for doing panoramas, but looking through the Flickr KAP group has convinced me people have a pretty good handle on what the issues are and how to solve them.

It's not quite the same, but it's darned close. When I first got into photography, I really craved a swing lens large format panorama camera but couldn't afford the many thousand dollar price tag.

I'm just overjoyed this software exists at all. The developers said if you're exporting with layers obviously it's because you think you can do a better job with the blending. The layer masks tend to have sharp edges that need to be softened in order to produce a good stitch. The one beef I have with ICE and layers is that once you tell it to save with layers it quits blending at all. The last time I used it, it saved as layers. There was a time when ICE didn't export layers, but lots of people raised this as a desired feature on the forums, so they put it back in. Any time I saw that I saved with layers and blended that area manually. I did a couple in Pololu Valley that produced these strange grayed out areas where it was trying to blend two waves together. Any panoramas built by Autostitch involving surf required export to Photoshop and hand work with the individual layers. Autostitch tended to have problems with surf when I was using it. Surf is a real issue for some panorama software, which ICE handled well here. It produced a good stitch, with good blending and no ghosting. Here's an ortho one I did in ICE that uses over 20 images: This is a feature I use pretty frequently.

I've been told Autopano Giga will do this as well now, though I haven't seen that change made to Autopano Pro, unfortunately. You sometimes have to tell it you're doing planar motion from multiple vantage points rather than rotational motion from a single vantage point, but it tends to handle these kinds of things with no real issues. The one area where ICE really excels, though I've been told Hugin and Panotools will do this as well, is when I'm using a down-only KAP rig with an intervalometer and walk around a subject collecting photos. I like all three programs (and wish Hugin could be made easier to use!) Prior to ICE I used Autostitch and yeah, ran hundreds of panos through it as well. I did try Hugin in the past, but found it a real PITA to use, as matjans said. Because of the non-commercial license, I picked up a copy of Autopano Pro, and have run hundreds of panos through it as well. Not sure why I have not done more KAP panorama - will have a go in future. Now I use ICE first to see if it is worth bothering with HUGIN. It refused to do anything reasonable with 6 perfectly good, well aligned, images. One potential problem is that it does not allow commercial use. The one that can save as Photoshop layers - not that I use this option much. All you have to do is transfer the files to ICE and it does the rest. Sue, I don't understand how you could have a problem with this program. The horizon alignments were often far from ideal. The rest were taken from a 10 m pole and a couple on the ground by hand.

I just put them in ICE to see what would happen. These two images were not taken from exactly the same level and the horizons did not align. These varied from 2 images in one row to 24 images in 3 rows. I have used ICE for around 40 panoramas and 39 were successful.
